The Island Batik Ambassador assignment for December is to create a whimsical or wonky project or to incorporate either theme into our quilt in some way. The project can be any size and use any fabrics. (As the year comes to a close, I'm really starting to appreciate these "any size" projects!) As a modern quilter, I really enjoy the whimsical/wonky/improv aspect of quilting. I've been in the Christmas spirit since before Thanksgiving and wanted to make a winter/holiday-themed project. I found this gorgeous Alpine Ice Sky Snowflake print online at Hancock's of Paducah and knew I needed to base my project around it.

My initial plan was to make a Modern Christmas Tree Quilt using the free tutorial from Amy Smart (Diary of a Quilter). I made a few blocks but didn't have a lot of greens in my stash so I wasn't loving the results. I think these blocks look great scrappy, but I didn't have enough different fabrics to do scrappy. I decided to pull out my E-Z Quilting Tri-Recs Ruler to make some less-wonky-but-still-whimsical trees.

Due to time constraints, I decided to make a mini quilt but it ended up taking me as long as a regular quilt!

I added some cute buttons for ornaments and star tree toppers and used a flange binding technique. I quilted it with my favorite Fantasy Flame pantograph from Urban Elementz. I had every intention of having this project done and posted by mid-December (I started by blog post draft on December 9!), but here I am posting on the first day of 2019. Oh well...there's an entire new year of trying to get stuff done in a timely manner!
