2020 More Modern HST BOM {April Block!}

How is everybody doing? These are unusual times to say the least, and I hope everyone is hanging in there and staying safe and healthy. I'm glad we have this block of the month going on to give us something to look forward to and work on...even if it's just for a short time each month. Here is the April block I designed:


Zina made another beautiful block using rainbow fat quarters from the Foundation collection by Shayla Wolf for Windham Fabrics.


I would show you my block but in my attempt to be somewhat organized, I have misplaced my entire BOM project bag somewhere in my sewing room. I will search for it this evening and hopefully have a block to share soon!

2020 More Modern HST BOM {Bonus Block!}

Ok...so a LOT has happened in the last few days. At a time like this, I am so grateful to have quilting as a creative outlet. When Zina and I started brainstorming quilt block layouts, we ended up with more than 12, and this is the perfect time to share Bonus Block #1.



There will be a total of 4 bonus quilt blocks. It's completely up to you if you want to make them/add them to your quilt. On December 1, we'll post different quilt layout options using the 12 monthly block and using 16 blocks (the 12 monthly blocks plus the 4 bonus blocks). If you want to sew your blocks together as you go, you can sew your bonus blocks together to make an extra row at the bottom of the quilt.

2020 More Modern HST BOM {February Block!}

Maybe it's just me, but January seemed to drag on forever! It is February and time for the second block of the 2020 More Modern HST BOM. Zina and I are taking turns designing each monthly quilt block, and here is my block design for February.



Here is Zina's version of the February block using rainbow fat quarters from the Foundation collection by Shayla Wolf for Windham Fabrics.

2020 More Modern HST BOM {January Block!}

It's finally here! The 2020 More Modern HST Block of the Month kicks off TODAY! Without further ado, here is the January block which is made up of 10 half square triangles and 2 neutral/background squares.


My cohost Zina is using some gorgeous rainbow fat quarters from the Foundation collection by Shayla Wolf for Windham Fabrics. Zina is starting with 6" finished HST and square blocks, and each of her monthly blocks will measure 18" x 24" finished. Here is her version of the January block.


I'm really attempting to sew from my stash this year and decided to make a scrappy monochromatic quilt using a mix of dark and light gray solid fabrics. (This color palette is a little outside my comfort zone, and I'll probably end up making a colorful version as well.) I'm using my AccuQuilt die cutting system to make HST and square blocks that will finish at 4" so my monthly quilt blocks will end up 12" x 16" finished.

Island Batik November 2019 {Blog Hop!}

Welcome! Today is my turn on the Island Batik Ambassador "A Piece Of" blog hop! All of the Island Batik Ambassadors received surprise bundles of fabric in our January 2019 boxes, but we weren't allowed to use the secret fabrics until it was time to make our blog hop projects. (You can check out my unboxing video on YouTube where I accidentally revealed the name of my secret fabric collection and learned a LOT about video editing to clip it out!) My surprise collection is Mermaid Cove, and it is full of amazing colors and prints.


My initial plan was to make my blog hop project while joining in the 2019 Free Wheeling Single Girl Sewalong. (This quilt pattern by Denyse Schmidt has been on my quilty to-make list for a long time.) I bought the pattern and the templates. I started chopping up fabric, piecing scrappy arcs and sewing some curves. The bright Mermaid Cove fabrics looked awesome paired with the black Island Batik solid...but the fabrics that were supposed to be the focus of my project was so chopped up you couldn't really see how awesome they are.


With the large scale of some of the prints, I decided some BIG quilt blocks were in order, and Jemima Flendt's "Quilt BIG" book was the perfect source. (I seriously love every pattern in here and want to make all of them. Maybe a goal for 2020?)

I had seen a few different versions of the Lozenge Quilt on Instagram. As a bonus, I had the AccuQuilt Companion Set - Angles to make two sizes of the blocks...always a huge time saver!


The largest size block in the quilt pattern is perfect for showcasing the large-scale prints.



Here are some of the medium-sized blocks in more pretty fabrics.


The finished quilt top is gorgeous, but you'll have to take my word for it. I live in Nebraska. It was 72 degrees and beautiful on Saturday. I finished piecing my quilt top on Sunday when it topped out at 52 degrees. My plan to take pics on Monday morning before work was foiled by snow, frigid temperatures (21 degrees) and a howling wind. My sweet husband and son agreed to take pictures Monday afternoon since it would be dark by the time I got home from work. Without further ado...


Apparently the wind was worse than it had been in the morning. This quilt top is next in line for the longarm to be quilted with black Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Cotton Blend batting. I promise to share pictures of the completed quilt soon.

October 2019 HST BOM

How is it already October? We're down to the last 3 blocks (and last row) of the 2019 Modern HST BOM. If you've been sewing your block every month, you are sooo close to having a completed quilt top. These HST blocks are pretty quick and easy, so there's also plenty of time to catch up!

Island Batik Quilts of Valor Blog Hop {Day 5}

Welcome to my blog as one of the final stops on the Island Batik Quilts of Valor Blog Hop! When fellow Island Batik Ambassador Jen Strauser put out a call for volunteers to participate in this effort for QOV, I knew I had to be involved. I've been a member of the Omaha, Nebraska Quilts of Valor chapter for a few years, and while I'm unable to attend the monthly meetings due to work, I am able to longarm quilts for them during my free time.

Island Batik generously donated fabric from their beautiful Freedom fabric line along with coordinating red, white, and blue yardage to all the blog hop participants. (If you want a chance to win an Island Batik Freedom Stack, head over to this post to enter!)
I always have a difficult time deciding on a quilt pattern. There are just so many possibilities! After doing a lot of online "research" I stumbled on these Log Cabin Triangles by Jan Ochterbeck of The Colorful Fabriholic. Half-square triangles and log cabins are two of my favorite quilt blocks, so I knew this was the perfect pattern. 


Unfortunately, this is as far as I got on my quilt. (I am very grateful to Jen for understanding and allowing me to post my progress instead of a completed quilt.) Summer has been busier than I expected with work, my son being out of school, and baseball. I've also had the opportunity to teach 4H workshops in Saunders and Cass Counties. Cass County 4H received a Quilts of Valor quilt kit, and I helped them assemble this disappearing nine patch quilt top a few weeks ago. After it is quilted and bound, it will be displayed at the Cass County Fair and the Nebraska State Fair.

Modern HST BOM {April 2019}

Happy April! Here is the fourth block for the Modern HST Block of the Month. I apologize for the delay in posting the April block to the blog.


Through the magic of Electric Quilt 8, I was able to draft up what a quilt would look like using just the April block. I love how HST quilt blocks make such fun secondary patterns when put together in a quilt.

Turnabout Patchwork Blog Hop

Welcome! Thanks for visiting my blog for my stop on the Turnabout Patchwork Blog Hop. I'm excited to be a part of the blog hop and to promote Teresa's new book which is available on Amazon or from Martingale. I was drawn to this book because I love starting with basic quilt blocks (like half square triangles) and rearranging them or randomly sewing them together to create quilts.

I made the Arrowhead quilt using half square triangles made from a stripe fabric and a neutral/background fabric. For my stripe fabric, I used Bake Shop Awning Stripes by Patty Sloniger for Michael Miller Fabrics, and I paired it with Kona white. When I make half square triangles, I almost always use my AccuQuilt Go!, but that wasn't going to work for this particular pattern. I hadn't trimmed down HSTs in a long time, and it was satisfying to have a stack of perfectly-trimmed HSTs and trimmings. (This was also a good reminder to try different methods and techniques from time to time.)


It took me awhile to start this project because I knew I wouldn't be able to get all the stripes matched up. (I have my vivid memories of my mom checking that my stripes were lined up correctly on my childhood sewing projects.) After I made one block, I realized it didn't matter if the stripes lined up or not!


Because I had some other projects going on, I decided to make a small baby/crib quilt. I love how just 12 of the Arrowhead quilt blocks make such a fun quilt.


I've been trying to only use my fabric stash this year, and I had the perfect Moda teal polka dot fabric that was just big enough for the backing. I used a dark navy solid for the binding.


I longarmed the quilt on my APQS Lucey. I used the Papyrus pantograph from Urban Elementz.

Island Batik September Challenge {Starstruck!}

The products used in this post were given to me by Island Batik.


Here was the September Island Batik Ambassador assignment:

 "Stars are something we see quite a lot of in the world of quilting! This month, we’re celebrating stars with our Starstruck event! Incorporate stars into your September project in any way you like - star pieced blocks, star appliques, or any other creative way you can dream up! Use any technique or method you like."

 I dug into my second Island Batik Ambassador box and decided I wanted to use my Island Stacks Paisley Dot Brights. (I'm a sucker for a bright rainbow of fabric.)
Wonky stars are one of my favorite blocks to make, so I made up a few to see how they looked as a scrappy rainbow on a neutral background. I *think* the neutral background is Buttermilk. I'm lucky one of my local quilt shops carries a great selection of Island Batik fabrics. I really need to be better about making note of the name when I buy fabric there, though!

I use 5-inch squares so each block finishes at 13.5 inches. Nine blocks makes a pretty cute baby blanket! (Of course I waited until the last day of September to get pictures taken and my blog post up. It's raining today, so front porch pictures will have to do!)


The backing is Kona Ash with some scraps of the paisley dot fabrics. I used Paisley Dot Purple for the binding.

For the quilting, I decided to move to the other side of my longarm and try some free-motion quilting. The wavy lines are pretty basic and easy to do, but it gives a fun look to the quilt and provides some amazing texture.


I make my quilt labels using PicMonkey and have them printed from Spoonflower. Up until now, I haven't been really happy with how I attach my quilt labels to the backs of my quilts. I recently found this method by Stash Bandit, and I've been really happy with the results. The border on the labels adds another fun bit of color to the quilt back.

The Island Batik Great Outdoors Blog Hop!

Aaaah the great outdoors. We’re seeing more and more research that says spending time outside is good
for your mental health. (A lot like quilting, in that way!) So, on those days when it’s just too hot to fire up the
iron and sewing machine, we say get outside and have fun walking, tending to your garden, or just basking in
the glorious (hot) sun!


The great outdoors are what inspired this hop’s theme. Throughout the month of August, our Ambassadors
will be featuring Island Batik’s newest fabrics, appearing on shop shelves SOON! See something you like?
Ask for it at your local quilt shop, or request it if you don’t yet see it. We have the most delicious collections to
share with you!


One of the fun things about being an Island Batik Ambassador is being able to sew and create with a fabric
line before it has been released. When I opened my "Surprise!" package of fabric from the box we
received in January, I had received the Spirit Rhythm collection.
To be honest, this is not a fabric line I would have chosen for myself as I tend to gravitate towards brighter,
more rainbow-colored fabrics. Another great thing about being an IB Ambassador is the opportunity to do
things outside my comfort zone. Afterlorking with these fabrics, I've grown to love the deep, rich colors and
the graphic, geometric patterns. Because I wanted the focus to be on the fabrics, I decided to use my HST
Building Blocks plan using AccuQuilt 6.5 inch (6 inch finished) half-square triangles. (If you live in the Omaha/Lincoln area, I'm teaching this workshop at Calico House in Lincoln on Saturday, Sepember 29!)

I was able to use all the fabrics from the Spirit Rythm collection and paired them with an Island Batik neutral I found at my local quilt shop. 


I pieced the back and used  a black and cream stripe for the binding. I used a "Seagrass Braid" edge-to-edge pantograph from Urban Elementz.



 I was hoping to get some better quilt pictures using the beautiful Lake of the Wood as the backdrop, but it was
too windy today. Fortunately I have a wonderful husband that helped me get some pictures to share!
