2021 Modern HST BOM {August!}

I'm having a hard time believing it is already August! My son starts high school in just 10 days, and I have a feeling it's going to be a bigger adjustment for than for him. (And yes...we start school EARLY around here.)

For all of the quilt blocks, you will want make your small HST 4 patch first. (Remember, the finished size of your small HSTs will be half the finished size of your other HSTs. For example, my HST blocks are 4" finished (4-1/2" unfinished) so all of my small HSTs will be 2" finished (2-1/2" unfinished).) To make the June block's small HST 4 patch, arrange your small HSTs as shown in the diagram below:

To assemble the July block, arrange 10 HSTs, 5 squares, and the HST 4 patch as shown below.

My preferred method of sewing my blocks together is to first sew the HSTs into rows, press the seams open, then pin and sew the rows together. I know many quilters choose to press their seams to one side, but I find pressing the seams open helps achieve precise points on those HSTs. Zina posted a great explanation on Instagram.

In 2021, Zina and I are teaming up with Miriam of Quilt Africa Fabrics. Miriam generously provided me and Zina with some beautiful African fabrics for our 2021 quilts. She has also curated some beautiful color-coordinated mystery fat quarter bundles that are perfect for this year's BOM. They are available for purchase in her shop!

Zina used some gorgeous red, yellow and blue African fabrics paired with white and black to make another stunning block for August.

If you are on Instagram, please share pictures of your completed blocks! Use the hashtag #modernhstbom2021 so we can find you. You can also tag me (@stephjacobsondesigns), Zina (@zanymouse) and Miriam (@quiltafricafabrics). If you're on Facebook, you can post pictures of your blocks on my Facebook page.

Happy sewing!
