2021 Modern HST BOM {July!}

Happy July! July is one of my favorite months for a few reasons. I love the 4th of July! Not so much the fireworks...but the food, friends & family, parades, festivities and all-around love of the U.S.A. makes me so happy! Also, my birthday is July 12, so I like to spend the first 12 days of the month celebrating. I'll be 45 this year, and life is good!

But enough about that! Here is the July block designed by me:

For all of the quilt blocks, you will want make your small HST 4 patch first. (Remember, the finished size of your small HSTs will be half the finished size of your other HSTs. For example, my HST blocks are 4" finished (4-1/2" unfinished) so all of my small HSTs will be 2" finished (2-1/2" unfinished).) To make the June block's small HST 4 patch, arrange your small HSTs as shown in the diagram below:

To assemble the July block, arrange 11 HSTs and the HST 4 patch as shown below.

My preferred method of sewing my blocks together is to first sew the HSTs into rows, press the seams open, then pin and sew the rows together. I know many quilters choose to press their seams to one side, but I find pressing the seams open helps achieve precise points on those HSTs. Zina posted a great explanation on Instagram.
