2021 Modern HST BOM {Layouts!}

Finally...a post on possible layouts for your 2021 Modern HST BOM quilt top! I really meant to post this earlier, but somehow it's almost Thanksgiving. Better late than never, I suppose!

The 2021 Modern HST BOM is made up of 2 different sizes of blocks... 4x4 square blocks and 3x4 (or 4x3) rectangular blocks. If you made the monthly blocks, you will have 12 blocks to make your quilt top. If you also made the 4 bonus blocks, you will have 16 blocks for your quilt top.

You are welcome to assemble your blocks any way you like, and I love seeing how creative everyone is with their layouts. I always go for simple and straightforward, so here are 2 basic layouts you can use. If you made all 16 blocks, you can make a quilt with 4 rows of 4 blocks per row. Each row will have two 4x4 blocks and two 3x4 blocks. (I used a gray background to highlight the blocks, but now I think the blocks would look good with sashing and borders!)

This is the layout I used to assemble my quilt top. I assembled the blocks in order by month (row 1: January - April; row 2: May-August; row 3: September-December) and used the four bonus blocks as the fourth row. I made my blocks with 4-1/2" half square triangles (4" finished) so my completed quilt is 56" x 64" which is a great lap/throw size.

If you have 12 blocks, you can make 3 colums with 4 blocks in each column. Each column will have two 4x4 blocks and two 4x3 blocks.

If you decide to go with one of these basic layouts, you can assemble your blocks in any order you would like. Feel free to play around with layouts! I actually have my quilt done, quilted and bound. I even got it submitted to QuiltCon 2022 in Phoenix and am nervously awaiting to find out if it was accepted to the show. I'm looking forward to sharing my completed quilt after the final block is released on December 1.

Huge thanks to my cohostess Zina for coming up with these layouts. I hope she doesn't mind me sharing her initial sketch, but it is such a good reminder of how the design process starts. Amazing things begin with pencil and paper.

If you are on Instagram, please share pictures of your completed blocks! Use the hashtag #modernhstbom2021 so we can find you.
