2021 Modern HST BOM {Bonus Block #4!}

Woohoo! Here is the 4th and final bonus block for the 2021 Modern HST BOM! That leaves only 2 blocks (November and December) until we have ALL the blocks for our quilts! This block was designed by Zina:

There are 4 optional bonus blocks for this year's HST BOM. If you choose to make the bonus blocks in additional to the monthly blocks, you will end up with a total of 16 quilt blocks. The bonus blocks can be added as an additional row on your quilt. I'm planning on adding my row of bonus blocks to the bottom of my quilt top.

For each quilt block, make your small HST 4 patch first. Remember that the finished size of your small HSTs will be half the finished size of your other HSTs. For example, my HST blocks are 4" finished (4-1/2" unfinished) so all of my small HSTs will be 2" finished (2-1/2" unfinished). To make the bonus block's small HST 4 patch, arrange your small HSTs as a mini pinwheel shown in the diagram below:

To assemble Bonus Block #4, arrange your 12 HSTs, 2 background squares, and the HST pinwheel 4 patch as shown below.

In 2021, Zina and I are teaming up with Miriam of Quilt Africa Fabrics. Miriam generously provided me and Zina with some beautiful African fabrics for our 2021 quilts. Somehow, I actually have my block completed before the pattern is released! 

I was at a quilt retreat in Winterset, Iowa the first weekend of October and finally had time to get caught up. (If you're ever in Winterset, be sure to stop by Piece Works Quilt Shop!) I started sewing my blocks together and plan on having my completed quilt ready to share in December when the final block is released. 

Before the end of the October, I'll be posting the basic quilt layout for the 12 monthly quilt blocks and a 16-block layout for those also making the bonus blocks. If you need a little extra incentive to finish your blocks and assemble your quilt top, I will be longarming a quilt for one participant (US only due to shipping costs) that posts a fully assembled quilt top by December 31, 2021!
